Myanmar national convicted for possessing drugs

Special Court of NDPS, Manipur announced the conviction of a Myanmar national under NDPS Act on August 30.

Special Court of NDPS, Manipur judge, Kh Ajit on August 30 announced conviction order of a Myanmar national under section 22(b) NDPS Act for an offence of unauthorised illegal possession of contraband Methamphetamine tablets.

Myanmar National, identified as Ko Hete, 35, son of U Soe of Moiwa Debainging, Myanmar, was arrested by Custom Preventive Force, Moreh on July 28, 2017 near the Primary Health Centre of Phaichang Veng Road, Moreh ward number 3 under section 22(c), 23 (c) and 60 of NDPS Act, 1985.

From his possession, CPF found 7000 numbers of WY tablets weighing 700 gm.  Moreover, according to officials, the arrested person had methamphetamine tablets packet weighing 20 gm without the weight of the plastic packet containing 200 tablets each.

During the course of investigation, a customs officer sent a sample of the seized WY tablets to the directorate of forensic science, Assam and reports confirmed that sample test positive for Methamphetamine which is a psychotropic substance.

After receiving the prima facie evidence, cognizance was taken and charge was framed against him by predecessor for offence punishable under section 22 (c) of NDPS Act, 1958 as there were sufficient materials to frame charge against him.

After considering the facts and circumstances, Ko Hete was convicted under section 22 (b) of NDPS Act for committing the offence of unauthorised possession of 20 gm of contraband Methamphetamine tablets which is an intermediate quantity, the court stated.
