At least two people from Khuljang road near Chakpikarong, Chandel district, including a Myanmar national, have been arrested for impersonating and using Aadhaar of a dead person and another for assisting in the illegal immigrant to enter India.

A team of 37 Assam Rifles of Shalluk in Chakpikarong subdivision on Monday handed them over to Chakpikarong police station.

The incident comes in the wake of a mass drive launched by the police to check illegal immigrants in the state.

Expressing concerns, Manipur Chief Minister wrote on his Facebook post, “Our generation has been threatened by our own people who are bringing illegal immigrants into our state".

The arrested persons have been identified as one Lenkhenmang Mate, 26, son of Doujatong Mate of Tuivang village in Myanmar and Letminthang Baite, 30, son of L Ngamlet Baite of Charongching village, Chandel district – the latter was arrested on the charge of assisting the Myanmar national to enter India from Khengjang Village near Molcham Police Station, Chandel District.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) (range II), Ningshen Worngam told media at officer club, 1st Manipur Rifles, Babupara on Wednesday that during preliminary investigation by Chandel district Police it has been found that Lenkhenmang was holding an Aadhaar card named as Holkholal, 38, son of Tongkhotahang of Khengjang Village, Chandel District, which was not his real name.

Ningshen said Holkholal had passed away in May 2019 and Lenkhenmang was impersonating Holkholal by possessing the Aadhaar card of the deceased person to aid in his illegal border trading or business.

A case has been registered at Chakpikarong police station and the two persons arrested under relevant sections of IPC and the Foreign Act.

Responding to the media, Ningshen said international border fencing at 34 border pillars has been continuing. When the fencing work is completed state police personnel will be deployed for checking the entry of illegal foreigners, the officer added.

He said a mass verification drive to detect illegal immigrants is continuing in the state at border areas and verification of tenants will also be conducted across the state.
