The number of drug users and drug business is increasing in the state and it has affected the society to a large extent, a release stated. The main concern now is how to prevent the youths from getting their hands into drugs, it added.

Education of youths is vital to build a better society. However, youths using drugs cannot concentrate in education and using drugs is also a main factor why youths are separated from education, it stated.

As per a report of Magnitude of Substance Use India 2019, Manipur ranks among the states with maximum number of youths using injections. There is also a report that youths around the age of 12 are found indulging in one or other drugs, the release mentioned.

The MSF stated that many drug addicts have been infected with HIV and many have suffered from Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis while many have died from overdose.  As such, apart from the steps taken up by meira paibis in the state in the fight against drugs, educational institutions as well as localities should also play their own parts to make the state a drug free society, it added.

The state government has also initiated its ‘Nisha Thadokshi’ programme wherein it will select 80 educational institutions to spread awareness on how to avoid drugs. As such, all sections of the state should also support such initiative of the state government, said the release.

The release further stated that programmes on drug prevention, harm reduction and demand reduction should also be regularly organised since focusing on only harm reduction will not help in solving the drug problems in the state.

Instead of discriminating against drug users, they should be motivated to abandon their habits and they should be encouraged to take more interest in education, it added.
