Miscreants fired at the Manipur People’s Party (MPP) working president residential courtyard which is located at Bashikhong PHC road, Imphal East at around 7.30 pm Saturday.

Irilbung police reported that information was received through a mobile phone from one person identified as Binolata, who is the Pradhan of Bashikhong Gram Panchayat, around 7.30 pm. She reported that some unknown persons, numbering around six, came in two scooters (Honda Activa) and Yamaha bike and enquired about Ningombam Ojit Meitei, who is MPP working president.

She also reported that Ojit, 62, son of (L) N Tomal of Bashikhong PHC road, is an advocate by profession.

According to Binolata, the unknown persons asked her whether they knew who they were and then told the family members to inform Ojit to relieve himself from the post of MPP president within two-three days.

One of the unknown persons fired two rounds at the courtyard and fled away, the police reported.

The police further stated that the unknown miscreants revealed themselves to the family as members of an underground outfit. The unknown persons had also come on Thursday and Friday at the same time.

However, no casualties have been reported. A case has been registered at Irilbung police station for further investigation.

Speaking to the media at the conference hall of the party office located at Imphal on Sunday, Ningombam Ojit Meitei termed it unfortunate that such an incident occurred at his residence.

He said he joined the party trying to solve the issues of the state including border issues, ILP and others. And for the presidential election of MPP which is to be held on January 28, he collected his nomination paper on Saturday, he said.

During the incident, he was not at his residence and he was informed by his family members about the incident, said Ojit.

He appealed to the miscreants to disclose themselves and asked why they should threaten him as his residence with guns.

He informed that there are three presidential candidates for MPP, including him. The other two are Ch Shamjai, who is the present interim president of the party, and Bikram from Lamlai assembly constituency.
