A welcome gate being set up across the road amid tight security in front of the Manipur BJP office at Nityaipat Chuthek, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state resulted in massive traffic congestion and caused much inconvenience to the commuters in the capital city on Monday.

With only eight days left for the 12th Manipur Assembly Elections 2022 which first phase will take place on February, the prime minister is scheduled to visit the state on Tuesday.  During his visit, Modi will be addressing an election rally at Luwangpokpa Cricket Stadium ground located at Luwangshangbam, Imphal East on Tuesday.

In view of the PM’s visit, welcome gates are being installed at various places in Imphal, including the gate installed on the other side of the road of the state BJP office. While the welcome gate was to be completed with banners, hundreds of vehicles was stuck at the gate for more than half an hour on Monday evening.

One person, who identified himself as duty magistrate of Imphal West district, also came to the spot and during interaction he told IFP that such gate should have a minimum height of 16 feet so that disturbance do not occur to commuters. The gate installed in front of BJP office seems not to have the minimum height, he added.

One of the commuters, who was stuck in the traffic congestion at Nityaipat Chuthek said before installing such gate the contractors should follow certain rules and regulations. As the contractors installed the gate in a war footing without following certain rules, it is causing traffic congestion, he said.

Irked by the long traffic jam, the commuter questioned the use of installation of such welcome gate for a one-day visit, saying it causes trouble to commuters.

Another commuter, who was also stuck in the traffic congestion told IFP, expressed concern and said, “What will happen if any emergency patient is going to pass through the road? Such welcome gate is inappropriate?”

BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi on Sunday appealed to the people of the state to extend their support and cooperation to the prime minister's visit.
