As part of their nationwide campaign, representatives of Meetei/Meitei Tribe Union (MMTU) have submitted a memorandum to the chairman of National Commission for Minorities Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Northeast in-charge of AICC Girish Jah, and social activist Rami Niranjan Desai, seeking their support for the Meetei/Meitei inclusion in the ST list on Wednesday.
Iqbal Singh Lalpura acknowledged the necessity of including the Meetei in the ST list, noting the existing inclusion of the Kuki community. He has directed his secretary to prepare and submit a report to the relevant authorities. Social activist Amrit Singh Pahwa also endorsed the inclusion, highlighting the Meitei community’s rich historical and cultural heritage, stated a release.
Rami Niranjan Desai affirmed that the demand for ST inclusion is a fundamental right of the Meeteis and asserted that no other community should obstruct this request, it mentioned.
The MMTU delegation also briefed Girish Jah on their concerns, and he committed to arranging a meeting with President of the AICC, Mallikarjun Kharge. Prior to this, the representatives had discussions with president of the MPCC K Meghachandra, and AICC member N Bhupenda.
