As part of the nationwide campaign of Meitei/Meetei Tribe Union (MMTU) for the inclusion of the Meetei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list, representatives of the union met with National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) member Nirupama Chakma and Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha National president Rashree Chaudhuri.
During the meeting, Nirupama Chakma acknowledged the importance of the demand, stating that inclusion could help resolve enduring issues affecting the community in North-East India.
She stressed that the campaign should promote peace and unity while addressing the needs of marginalised groups in the region, stated a release.
Rashree Chaudhuri also supported the Meetei community’s cause, calling it an urgent matter.
She noted that the Meetei people have endured historical injustices, and their inclusion in the ST list would help redress these wrongs, it mentioned.
Chaudhuri also maintained that this recognition is vital for the survival and preservation of the community under the Indian Constitution, drawing parallels with protections granted to indigenous groups by the United Nations, it stated.
MMTU also submitted memorandums to relevant ministers, political leaders, and social activists, it added.
