Heirok Assembly constituency MLA Thokchom Radheshyam on Saturday alleged the candidates who had contested the recent general election of being absent at a time when the farmers of Heirok are suffering from shortage of fertilisers.

Even if they had lost the election, they could still come out and assist the poor farmers at trying times like these, he said.

He was speaking at the inspection of the ongoing distribution of fertilisers to the farmers of Heirok assembly constituency under the Agriculture nominee of the MLA.

He said the Heirok constituency is mostly populated by farmers. “We are right now facing the need of 12,000 urea bags. The state government has provided around 5,000 bags so far,” he said.

It is unfortunate that some people had attempted to spread false information that the urea was being handed over only to the BJP, he said. The fertilisers are meant only for farmers and not for any political parties, he added.

He clarified that there has been no discrimination to anyone while distributing rice, gas etc. The urea currently being distributed is being given to the farmers who possess pattas.

To fulfil the requirements of farmers and mitigate the issues arising out the shortages of fertilisers, many Farmers Clubs had been established. Many of the farmers enrolled at these clubs have different political affiliations, he added.

“Those who do not wish to join these clubs are not forced to enrol as members. The Heirok Block Congress Committee should try to find where their leaders have gone instead of holding press conferences to express that fertilisers are not available,” he said.

“Many candidates who lost the election are distributing urea at their respective assembly constituencies by collecting them from the department. Why cannot the candidates of Heirok constituency do the same?” he added.

He further appealed not to spread unfounded rumours.
