Miscreants open fire in Imphal East

Locals of Napet Palli Mayai Leikai, Napet Palli Youth Club and Napet Palli Meira Paibi Lup staged a sit-in-protest at the community hall of its premises on Friday.

As the next Manipur Legislative Assembly Election approaches, more incidents of violence are being reported from several assembly constituencies in the state as some miscreants allegedly opened fire at the gate of a residence at Lamlai assembly constituency, Imphal East on Thursday.

The incident took place at around 8.30 pm at the gate of secretary, Napet Palli Village Managing Committee Sagolshem Lakpati. Soon after, a team of Lamlai police station rushed to the spot for spot enquiry and a magazine of a firearm loaded with 5 live rounds was found.

Lakpati told the media that he does not have any enmity with anyone, and expressed his confusion about the incident. He appealed to those behind the act to clarify why they opened fire at his residential gate.

Meanwhile, in connection with the incident, locals of Napet Palli Mayai Leikai, Napet Palli Youth Club and Napet Palli Meira Paibi Lup staged a sit-in-protest at the community hall of its premises on Friday.

A protestor, Ngairangbam Anandi Leima who is also advisor of Napet Palli Meira Paibi Lup told the media that the locals strongly condemned the shooting in a populated area.

The miscreants should immediately clarify they attempted something which could harm innocent people. The authority concerned should find out those miscreants involved, she added.

She appealed to the people that after 6 pm no persons other than the locals are allowed to enter the jurisdiction of Napet Palli Mayai Leikai.

The protesters held placards that read, ‘we want peace’, ‘ no shooting in residential areas’ and others.
