Mnaipur Employment Minister Th Satyabrata on Friday greeted the people of Manipur on the historic occasion of 82nd Nupi Lan Day which falls on Sunday, and recalled the valour of the women warriors against the British colonial rule.
In his message, he asserted that the memorable and historic episode was a turning point in Manipur history as it sowed the seeds of economic and political reforms. “The first Nupi Lan of 1904 was against the British order to send Manipuri men to Kabow Valley to fetch timber for re-building the then Police Agent’s bungalow, after it was ravaged by fire”, “the second Nupi Lan of 1939 was set off by the indiscriminate export of rice from Manipur by Marwari businessmen with the support of British rule”, he recalled.
Manipuri women of today also take multifarious roles at workplace, home front, social, political and economic domains by empowering and taking responsibility of the social and public affairs, he commended. The meira paibis and “women in Manipur lead the battle against drug menace, human rights violation, corruption, Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and the Citizenship Bill”, he added.
Urging the public to remember the courage and spirits of the women warriors who valiantly fought the British rule, he invited the people to pay tribute to the symbolic roles of the brave ‘Ima’ (mothers), and honour and encourage the Manipuri women of today, on the 82nd Nupi Lan Day celebration.
