Minister Awangbow Newmai on Thursday distributed financial assistance under the “Awangbow Newmai Special Scheme for Widow, Widower, Orphan, and Disabled” for the months of May to August 2024.

As many as 396 beneficiaries received Rs 500 each per month during the 52-Tamei Assembly Constituency NPF Get-Together cum Advent Christmas event at his residence in Tamei.

The scheme, launched in 2022, aims to support the welfare of widows, widowers, orphans, and people with disabilities in the region.

Minister Newmai emphasised that while government schemes exist, they often cannot reach all deserving individuals, especially in light of healthcare challenges in the area.

The financial support is funded from the minister’s salary, with 65 per cent allocated for the scheme, in addition to voluntary donations from supporters.

He also urged workers to select beneficiaries based on merit, rather than political ties. The initiative will continue for the duration of the current term of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

The event was attended by Namsinrei Panmei, the former ADC chairman of Tamenglong district.
