Even as state police began arresting armed village volunteers in the valley, suspected Kuki militants launched an attack at Chingdai Ching on Wednesday.
According to sources, the militants reportedly launched the attack from atop Semol hill under Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district around 7:10 am.
The gunfight was the latest in more than four months of near-daily violence that has plagued the state.

The militants opened unprovoked fire towards a Meitei shrine located at Chingdai Ching. Following the attack, village volunteers also resorted to retaliatory firing, leading to a fierce exchange of fire. The crossfire lasted for almost 20 minutes till 7:30 am.
Meanwhile, in another encounter, suspected Kuki militants from Leingang Kuki Village in Henglep assembly constituency reportedly fired several rounds towards Phubala Maning area around 11:30 am.
There are no confirmed reports of casualties or injuries from the two incidents till the time of filing this report.
