Militant arrested with explosives in Imphal

A PREPAK (Pro) cadre planned to plant an improvised explosive device (IED) at Mantripukhri.

A combined team of district police commando unit, Imphal East and 15 Assam Rifles, on Thursday arrested one active cadre of proscribed underground organisation PREPAK(Pro) along with improvised explosive device (IED) which was to be planted, reportedly at Mantripukhri, Imphal.

The arrested person has been identified as Nongthombam Abung Meetei alias Nongdamba, 20, son of N Nandakumar Meetei of Nongpok Sanjenbam Khullen which falls under the jurisdiction of Lamlai police station, Imphal East.

Superintendent of police, Imphal East, N Herojit Singh told reporters on Friday at his office conference hall located at Imphal East that the combined team under the command of additional superintendent of police, Imphal East, Roni Mayengbam conducted mobile frisking and checking, cordoned and searched operation in different areas of Mantripukhri-Koirengei along NH-39 (Imphal-Dimapur) on Thursday at about 3.35 pm.

During the operation, Abung was arrested from the northern side of Koirengei bridge, he added.

During verification Abung disclosed that he came to Mantripukhri-Koirengei area looking for a place to plat an IED to attack the security forces particularly Indian Army. On further examination, it came to learnt that the arrestee kept conceal two IED bomb at the foothill of Thumbi Ching, Nongpok Sanjenbam which he brought from Moreh in the month of October, he added.

Abung further disclosed that the IEDs were handed over to him by one Ango of the same proscribed underground organisation and instructed him to plant them at Mantripukhri area along NH-39 road to target and attack the security forces, said Herojit.

Immediately, the same team along with the arrestee rushed to the said foothill and on the pointing of the arrestee, 2 RDX (cake) weighing about 150 grams; 2 RC receiver (circuit board); 2 electric detonators (no.33), 2 9-volt battery (Panasonic); one remote control device; one mobile phone and one wallet were recovered from the spot i.e foothill of Thumbi CHing, NOngpok Sanjenbam, he added.

Herojit said the arrested person along with the seizures have been handed over to Heingang police station for further necessary actions. He appealed the public to inform police if any suspicious objects are detected to Imphal East police control room 2452669 or to his personal mobile number 9436038404 or to additional superintendent of police, Imphal East 8131915684. He also said the operation is one of the big achievement of district police.
