Following a suo-motu case taken up on the basis of newspaper reports regarding the demand of resumption of classes at the earliest by students of various colleges in Manipur, the directives were given.

According to the news reports, it is stated that classes have been brought to a standstill since the government college teachers under the banner of FEGOCTA and AMCTA are on boycott and cease work strike. It has also shown bodily injuries sustained by the protesting students following the police excesses, said the order of MHRC.

It further directed the SP, Imphal West to submit a report on the alleged excess of police action against the students.

The commission also advised the FEGOCTA and AMCTA to approach the appropriate legal forum to redress their grievances instead of boycott and cease work strike as the same are illegal as per the judgment of the Supreme Court.

Asserting that the news report has a prima-facie for violation of Right to Education of the students of various colleges in Manipur, the order mentioned, “The commission is of the considered view that the right to education is one of the fundamental rights for students. It should not be curtailed at any cost.”
