Incessant rainfall over the past few days has caused major rivers to swell and resulted in widespread flooding in Thoubal district, Manipur on Tuesday.
Residents of Thoubal are grappling with severe flooding. The Wangjing Riverbank at Tentha Khunou has breached by at least 5 meters, inundating numerous homes. Local residents have been working tirelessly through the night to prevent further flooding.
Similarly, the Nongdamabi River, which flows through Kairembikhok village, has breached its banks and flooded several roads. The Wangjing River also overflowed in Sangaiyumpham Part (ii) Kabarsthan, affecting around 50 acres of paddy fields and farms. Locals put their efforts to mitigate the damage.
Former Khangabok MLA Okram Landhoni visited the affected areas, providing machinery and essential aid. Many paddy fields in Tekcham Sapam have also been submerged.
The water level of the Etok River has reached a warning level, prompting residents near the river to evacuate to safer areas. The Thoubal River has also hit warning levels.
Additionally, debris from the Ching Kakpham landslide in Kakching and Thoubal districts has obstructed water flow. Efforts to clear the debris have begun, but many fish farms, paddy fields, and six to seven houses in Tekcham are already being inundated. Various clubs and organisations from Kakching and Tekcham, along with representatives from Tekcham Gram Panchayat, have been using excavators and other equipment to clear the debris since Tuesday morning.
L. Damenti, Chairperson of Tekcham Gram Panchayat, reported that 4 out of 5 brooks in Lousi Khongjao Chingkakpham are blocked by debris, causing water to overflow into paddy fields and farms, resulting in the inundation of at least 6 to 7 houses. Despite the efforts of local clubs and organisations, the debris remains largely untouched. If the situation is not addressed by Wednesday, many farms and houses in Tekcham, Sapam, Irengband, Sora Kakching, Papal, and other areas will face severe flooding. Damenti has urged the authorities to deploy additional machinery to expedite the debris removal.
L Priyobarta, secretary of Ningsing Lup Tekcham, highlighted that the debris will affect Kakching, Wabagai, and Wangjing Tentha Assembly Constituencies. He has called on the three MLAs to support the debris-clearing efforts.
