Manipur's Kangla Nongpok Thong reopens to public, Western gate to remain closed

The Kangla Nongpok Thong was handed over to the public on Tuesday by Chief Minister N Biren Singh in presence of Rajya Sabha MP, Leishemba Sanajaoba.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday handed over the newly restored “Kangla Nongpok Thong” (Kangla Eastern Gate) to the public in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba. It was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to the state.

Speaking on the occasion, Biren said the public can now visit the sacred Kangla from Kangla Nongpok Thong and the Kangla Western gate will remain closed from Tuesday. He said the Kangla Nongpok Thong will be manned by Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel with traditional uniform. Vehicles will not be allowed to enter from the Kangla Western gate, if necessary then the vehicles will be allowed to enter from Kangla Northern gate, Biren added.

The chief minister said the road from Kangla Eastern Gate towards DC, Imphal East office will be made with 2 lanes and appealed to the people residing adjacent to the gate and along the road to cooperate with the developmental work in order to bring a historic scenic beauty.

He said the Kangla Nongpok Thong was officially inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah but the government handed it over to the public with a ritual ceremony followed by Maibas and Maibies (Meitei priestess and priest).

The chief minister said it is a matter of pride for a small state like Manipur that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given his consent on the reopening of Kangla Nongpok Thong by tweeting “May the spirit of peace, prosperity and happiness be enhanced across the state”.

He also appealed to the people of the state to live unitedly and that the state government will also put in efforts to bring peace, prosperity and harmony to the state with the opening of Kangla Nongpok Thong.

The Kangla Nongpok Thong was constructed with Imphal Smart City Limited (ISCL) as the Funding Agency and Manipur Police Housing Corporation Limited (MPHC Ltd) as the Work Agency.

Cabinet ministers, MLAs, high ranking officials and locals of the area attended the programme.
