Eminent ophthalmologist Dr Ronel Soibam of Manipur was honoured as one of the “International Ophthalmic Heroes of India” by the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) during its recent Dreamcon Annual Conference for bagging the Asia Pacific Ophthalmology Award.
Hailing from Heirangoithong Keibung Makha in Imphal West, 48-year-old Ronel, who specialises in “Vitreo-Retina” was conferred with the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Achievement Award in Hong Kong, in September 2021.
Ronel along with his spouse Dr Surpriya Hawaibam, who specialises in “Orbit and Oculoplasty” were working as a senior consultant and consultant respectively at Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati. The two are planning to start a private eye clinic in Imphal this year.

Having authored and co-authored national and international publications, Dr Ronel also won several awards in his professional line and had been taking part in hordes of national and international conferences.
Currently, he is a professional member of the All India Ophthalmological Society; Delhi Ophthalmological Society; All Assam Ophthalmological Society and Vitreo Retinal Society – India and a lifetime member of Ocular Trauma Society of India.
Besides his medical profession, Ronel has a deep passion for cycling and long distance running. He participated in a marathon event during the Sangai Festival in Manipur.
