Imphal city is apprehensive about facing floods for the second time after impact of Remal cyclone, as most of the major rivers flowing across the Imphal valley have exceeded their high flood levels, overflowing in many places; the water levels in the six major rivers of Manipur are still rising.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), in its updated report, mentioned that southwest monsoon rains will affect Manipur with widespread rainfall for the next seven days. The Manipur government has also issued a public advisory on Monday evening, stating that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Manipur for the next five days according to the IMD report.
The public advisory informed everyone to follow traffic advisories, avoid staying in vulnerable structures, secure vegetable stalls, seek shelter during thunderstorms and lightning, use mulch at the base of crops to prevent soil and root damage, avoid working in fields during thunderstorms, and ensure proper drainage mechanisms.
It further requested all the deputy commissioners to promptly issue guidance on precautions to mitigate anticipated calamities at the earliest. The public advisory also included helpline numbers for 18 different control rooms.
The Directorate of Health, Government of Manipur, also directed all the Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) not to leave their respective stations and ensure continuity of healthcare services in all public health facilities. They are also instructed to coordinate with district administrations for necessary management in view of the unprecedented natural calamities.
Many parts of Imphal river bank on both sides are likely to be overflowed, as precautionary measures state authority along with local volunteers are putting their efforts with earth fill bags to prevent from overflowing.
State forces are seen diverting roads in vulnerable areas as precautionary measures.
Meanwhile, the Water Resources Department of Manipur, in its daily flood report updated till 5:00 am on Tuesday, mentioned that Kangpokpi district recorded the highest rainfall of 96 mm. The water levels of the main rivers of Manipur, including the Imphal River, Iril River, Nambul River, Nambol River, Thoubal River, and Manipur River, are flowing at high flood levels and are still rising.
Five gates of the Ithai Barrage are opened, while four gates of the Imphal Barrage are fully opened. Due to the flood-like conditions expected to continue for some days, the Directorate of Education-Schools, Manipur, has announced a two-day holiday for all state, government-aided, private, and central schools on June 3 and June 4 as a precautionary measure.
Earlier, due to the impact of Cyclone Remal in Manipur, over 1 lakh people were affected, 24,265 houses were damaged, and 434 hectares of crops were destroyed.
