The eight individuals who were allegedly killed by Kuki-Zo-Hmar militants including six women and children after being abducted and another youth alleged shot dead by a Senior SP, all in Jiribam recently, were laid to rest at the PPANL Bio-Diversity Park in Ningshing Khun, Jiribam on Friday.
Following a commitment from the Manipur government, two Joint Action Committees formed in response to the violence in Jiribam collected the victims’ bodies from Silchar Medical College on Saturday morning.
They were brought to the funeral site in a procession, where large numbers of people paid their respects along the way. It was attended by various CSOs, local clubs and meira paibi groups.
Speaking to the media, Mutum Maipaksana Mangang, Chairman of the Jiri United Committee, demanded that both the central and state governments take swift and decisive action against the militants responsible for the killings of innocent women and children. He also called for justice for the youth allegedly shot by the Senior SP.
Elangbam Dewan, president of the Jiri Development Organisation, urged the central government to break its silence on the violence, stressing that the people of Manipur were seeking justice for the brutal killings of innocent civilians, particularly women and children, at the hands of the Kuki militants.
The deaths of the eight individuals and the shooting of the youth have led to heightened tensions in the region, with the community calling for accountability and justice.
