A pervasive fear hangs heavy in the air in Manipur’s Jiribam district, after Kuki militants mounted a harrowing attack at the district on Monday, leaving the residents panic-stricken and traumatised.
The unabated unprovoked intensified violent attacks by the Kuki militants in the state have long tormented the innocent civilians, in an apparent effort to unnerve the people and wear down their spirits to endure the crisis that has crossed over a year.
In a string of violent and brutal attacks by Kuki militants, two elderly persons were allegedly murdered and burned at Kakuradhor Karong under Borobekra Police Station in Jiribam district on Monday.
According to sources, the victims have been identified as Laishram Barel, 63 years and Maibam Kesho, 71 years.

Their bodies were reportedly recovered on Tuesday morning, inside the shops which were set ablaze by the Kuki militants. One of the victims was allegedly found burned to death while the other bore bullet wounds.
Amid the violent acts, the Kuki militants have also kidnapped six civilians, all women and children.
The missing victims have been identified as Yurembam Rani, 66 years, wife of Late Nabakeshor; Laishram Heitombi, 25 years, wife of L Herojit; her two kids namely Laishram Chingkheinganba, a child of just 2 & 1/2 years and Laishram Lamnganba, an infant of just 10 months; Telem Thoibi, 31 years, wife of Telem Uttam and young T Thajanganbi, who is just an 8 year old child, sources said. All of them are reportedly from Modhupur.
Sources stated that both T Thoibi and L Heitombi are daughters of Yurembam Rani. The Kuki militants reportedly captured them and took them in a launch boat, sources added.

Reports also mentioned that the Kuki militants might have taken along some of their injured cadres as well as bodies of deceased cadres.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the Kuki militants who were killed in Monday’s encounter were shifted via chopper to Silchar Medical College & Hospital on Tuesday morning for postmortem.
On the other hand, an additional team of 20-A /CRPF were also deployed at Borobekra in Jiribam on Tuesday to intensify measures against the Kuki militants attack.
