Laishram Ningol Sanjita Devi, 34, of Kakwa Naorem Leikai, who was admitted to RIMS ICU on Thursday due to health complications caused by the toxic fumes from tear gas shells used during a disturbance at Kakwa on Wednesday night is said to be in a very critical condition.

This comes even as her unborn child is said to be dead.

On Friday, the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) issued a statement informing that Devi is in a very critical condition due to a massive intracranial bleed, as shown in her CT scan report.

According to the press release from the RIMS media cell, “An expert team has been constituted to assess the present status of Mrs. Laishram Ningol Sanjita Devi, 34, wife of Naorem Dipak Singh of Kakwa Naorem Leikai, who was admitted to the ICU on September 12, 2024.”

The expert team assessed the patient at 11 am on Friday. After consulting with family members, a CT scan of the brain was conducted which revealed a massive intracranial bleed. Currently, the patient’s pulse rate is 110 beats per minute, her blood pressure is 140/88 mmHg, her SpO2 level is 98 percent, and she is on a ventilator with inotropic support. Her condition remains very critical, RIMS said.

The statement also noted that RIMS is making every effort to provide the best possible care for her treatment.

Sanjita was admitted to RIMS following a health complication caused by the toxic fumes from tear gas shells used during a disturbance at Kakwa on Wednesday night. A combined team of state and central forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), fired several rounds of tear gas and live ammunition to disperse an agitated crowd in Kakwa.

The protestors were demanding stringent action against Kuki militants, who have been attacking Meitei villages since May 3 last year. The attacks have intensified since September 1, with drone bombings and long-range rockets.

In a statement to the media at RIMS, Lamphel in Imphal, the patient’s husband, Dipak, reported that the hospital authorities informed him that the unborn child has died, and his wife is in a very critical condition. The doctors advised that they cannot administer further medication but will continue treatment, hoping for recovery so that the deceased unborn child can be delivered normally, Dipak said.

Dipak also mentioned that the doctors told him that while his wife’s brain has been damaged, her heart, liver, and kidneys are still functioning. “I am confused about what treatment will be given,” said Dipak.

A large number of supporters of the victim’s family were seen at RIMS.
