The Social Welfare department, Manipur on Friday visited two two persons living with disabilities and provided one Motorized Tricycle and one pair of Auxiliary Crutch free of cost for their use.
A joint team of officials from this Directorate and District Social Welfare Office (DSWO), Imphal West carried out the visit following a news item in local cable TV on July 27 wherein two persons with disabilities (brothers & orphan) from Lairenjam Mayai Leikai, Imphal West district were reported to be living in a miserable condition with no benefits under any scheme meant for persons with disabilities, stated a release by Social Welfare director Ng Uttam.
It stated that the team visited Khwairakpam Sovet Singh and Khwairakpam Japan on July 29. Among them, Sovet has obtained Disability Certificate during the month of June, 2024 under UDID Project with 80 per cent of disability under Cerebral Palsy Category but, he has not applied for any scheme like CMST, it stated.
On this day, the team also transported Japan Singh to JNIMS OPD for assessment and submitted the assessment report to CMO Imphal West, it noted. The disability certificate will be generated from CMO Imphal West soon, it added.
During assessment, it was known that Japan is suffering from 82 per cent of disability under Locomotor Disability category and that he is eligible for Care Giver Allowance under CMST, it stated.
It also mentioned that the Social Welfare Department had already provided one Tricycle and a pair of Auxiliary Crutch to Sovet Singh during 2018-19.
He or his brother did not request the Department either for such aids and appliances or for financial assistance under CMST- Caregiver allowance in the past, it maintained. The visiting team provided one Motorized Tricycle (sponsored by Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation & Empowerment of PwDs, Takyelpat) and one pair of Auxiliary Crutch free of cost for their use, it stated.
Further, Sovet and Japan were also informed that they are eligible for Care Giver Allowance at Rs 1500 per month for life time under CMST Scheme, it stated. It also informed all concerned to get Disability Certificate under UDID Project from Chief Medical Officer (CMO) concerned or JNIMS or RIMS to avail benefits for persons with disabilities.
It added that the application should be submitted to the District Social Welfare office (DSWO) concerned or the Disability Cell, Directorate Office, Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur to avail the benefit(s) under any appropriate scheme.
