The Manipur government is making efforts to deploy mobile security forces along the two national highways of the state to prevent the collecting of illegal taxes from truck drivers by unidentified armed gangs, Chief Minister N Biren said in Imphal Friday.

Biren was replying to a calling attention motion raised by MLA Kh Joykishan on Friday, the third day of the 12th Session of Manipur Legislative Assembly regarding the frequent collection of illegal taxes by anti-social elements on the National Highway-37

The chief minister stated that the state government has appointed a ADGP to command and look into the security measures taken up along the highways of the state, to ensure safety of truck drivers from any anti-social elements.

However, compared to the past days, the law and order situation in the state, including the highways has drastically improved, Biren added.

Replying to a question raised by MLA Chaltonlien Amo regarding the financial assistance sanctioned by  the Central government for COVID-19 pandemic, he said that the National Health Mission has sanctioned a total of Rs 21,38,00,000; the NEC, Shillong has sanctioned a total of Rs 3 crore and Rs 4111 crore has been sanctioned under the PM Care Fund for combating, containment and relief effort against COVID-19 outbreak.

The state government has sanctioned funds to reward all the deserving COVID-19 warriors, including the team of JNIMS, who successfully treated the first COVID patient of the state, said Biren.

PHED Minister Losii Dikho said there are around 182 villages in Manipur where the water supply projects and schemes are non-functional. However, the state government will provide safe and adequate drinking water to every household by 2022 under the Jal Jeevan Mission of the Central government. He was replying to a question raised by MLA K Govindas regarding the Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme (ARWSP) in the PHED.

The minister said that the department will take up necessary steps to detect loopholes for the non-functioning of the schemes in those villages and provide drinking water facility to every house in the villages.
