Doctors of RIMS Hospital on Tuesday staged a sit-in decrying the physical assault of a medical doctor at RIMS on Monday.

The incident occurred around 6.30 pm on Monday when a man from Narankonjin in Imphal West, who brought his wife for medical examination at RIMS Gynaecology department, got into a verbal spat with the examining doctor which led to physical assault.

On Tuesday the doctors protested in front of the hospital's OPD.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the protest, RIMS medical superintendent Dr Sanjib strongly condemned the incident and stated that such mindless action upon a medical professional was uncalled for.

"If they have a complaint they should approach the hospital authority or any authorities concerned before taking the law into their hands," he said.

He also highlighted that a law had been enacted in 2016 which made destruction of hospital properties and assault of doctors punishable under the law.

They can be jailed for three years under this act, he added.

Meanwhile, advisor of Regional Doctor's Association Dr Sunilkumar pointed out that the examination of the female patient was conducted in the presence of a female nurse.

"The whole assault resulted from misunderstanding nonetheless, such actions should be condemned," he said.

He further appealed to all concerned to approach the higher authorities if they unsatisfied with the treatment or conduct of any medical professionals.
