Manipur poultry farmers have threatened to launch agitation if the government failed to take immediate steps to stop the import of fully grown chickens into the state.
One poultry farmers named Ningthoujam Kennedy told media in Imphal on Friday that in the last few years some of the businessmen have started selling chicken at a low price by importing fully grown chickens from outside the state.
He said poultry farmers of the Sekmai area are facing the impact of importing fully grown chickens and selling them at low price by some businessmen. He said poultry farmers of Manipur might stop rearing chickens if necessary steps were not taken in time by the government.
The government has been encouraging the youths of Manipur for self-reliance and with the idea the youths are taking various initiatives to become self-sustainable, he added.
He appealed to the government to take necessary steps to stop importing fully grown chickens in the state.
