Eye specialist from Manipur Surpriya Hawaibam has bagged the prestigious Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Achievement Award at the four-day long 38th edition of APAO Congress at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which concluded on Sunday.
A release stated that Surpriya Hawaibam who is a fellow in Orbit, Oculoplasty and Ocular oncology and former consultant of Sri Sankraradeva Nethralaya, Guwahati was conferred with the award for “making good contributions to the scientific programme of the APAO Congresses for the last five years in the form of paper presentation, video presentation and poster presentation etc.” Surpriya also won the most popular video award as a co-author in the Congress, it added.
“Surpriya, who completed her MBBS from GR Medical College, Gwalior, postgraduate (DNB ophthalmology) and Fellowship in Oculoplasty from Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya Guwahati, also presented papers as chief and co-authors,” it read.
Surpriya is the present medical director of Eastern Eye Foundation and Research Centre, Porompat while her husband Soibam Ronel, who is also an eminent ophthalmologist, is the chairman and managing director of the centre, it maintained.
It mentioned that Soibam Ronel was among a few doctors of the country who were honoured with the ‘International Ophthalmic Heroes of India’ by the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) at the society’s Dreamcon Annual Conference in Mumbai in June of 2022. AIOS feted Ronel for winning the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) achievement award held in Hong Kong in September 2020, it added.
