International Biodiversity Day, which is being observed across the globe, was also observed in Manipur with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Chandel organising a programme, ‘International Biodiversity Day: Conserving Biodiversity in the Hill’ on Sunday.
In a release, DLSA stated that under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLA) the ‘International Biodiversity Day: Conserving Biodiversity in the Hill’ was organised as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign at Mahamani Village in Chandel district.
The programme commenced with District Legal Services Authority, Chandel para legal volunteer Changlo Nula Anal’s welcome speech, it stated. Resource person of the programme advocate Jacky Lucy Lamkhang talked on the importance of biodiversity and its impact on the environment especially in the hill areas. She mentioned the hill people’s dependency on the forest resources and further stressed on the effects of over-exploitation of forest resources, it stated.
Highlighting the legal penalties for smuggling of forest products, she informed the participants on the urgency to adopt another means alternative to forest dependency, in order to conserve the forests, it further stated.

The event was attended by the village authorities, members of village organisation, local villagers, students and para-legal volunteers, it continued. The programme concluded with an interactive session with the participants, it added.
In Thoubal, the District Legal Services Authority, Thoubal under the aegis of Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLA) observed the International Biodiversity Day online on Sunday.
DLSA, Thoubal chairperson Binny Ngangom spoke on why biodiversity day has been celebrated and elaborated on this year's slogan ‘Building a shared future for all life’.
She stressed on the diminishing of butterflies, fireflies and frequent migratory birds from surroundings in a stark difference from a natural scenario during her childhood days, and is a cause for concern due to the rapid human activities which are detrimental to the earth's ecosystem.

DLSA secretary, Thoubal, Bineshwori Maibam also elaborated on the reason this year's biodiversity day is celebrated on the theme of ‘we are part of the solution’ as improving biodiversity gives the solution to the problems faced with sustainable development, extreme climate change such as the high rainfall during the April-May month this year, extreme summer temperature etc.
She further gave all the participants a message that “we need to conserve and equitably contribute to improve our biodiversity.”
The event was participated by the para legal volunteers and panel lawyers, remand lawyers under the aegis of DLSA, Thoubal.
