The All Manipur Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Union has announced a cease work strike from June 25 if the government does not increase their honorarium to a livable wage by June 24.

The decision was announced during a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal, with the union’s president Maibam Jamuna addressing the media.

Jamuna highlighted the dire financial situation faced by mid-day meal workers, who currently receive a meager honorarium of Rs 1,000 per month, down from the already insufficient Rs 1,500.

She emphasised that this amount is grossly inadequate to support a family in Manipur, placing workers in a precarious position.

“The mid-day meal workers are struggling to make ends meet. We have to report to work before the teachers arrive and leave only when the teachers do. Despite our crucial role in the school system, we are paid a pittance,” she stated.

“We are not asking for the same pay as teachers, but we need a minimum amount that allows us to run our families,” Jamuna added.

She also lamented the bureaucratic hurdles faced by workers in receiving their honorarium.

“To receive even the Rs 1,000, we often have to protest and wait for extended periods. Sometimes up to ten months. This is unacceptable and inhumane,” she added.

The president further cautioned school authorities against hiring substitute cooks during the strike.

If the cease work strike comes into effect due to government negligence, no school authorities should hire replacement cooks, he said, adding that the school authorities will be held responsible for any consequences that arise.
