In an effort towards combating substance abuse in Manipur, as many as 300 litres of locally brewed liquor confiscated from various locations in the Khurai area, were publicly destroyed by burning at Popular Club, Imphal East.

The liquor was seized by the Nongpok Leingak Apunba Nupi Lup (NLANL) and Khurai Konsam Leikai Apunba Nupi Lup during a series of raids.

The vendors and shops involved in the illicit sale of liquor were given a stern warning and urged to cease all liquor-related activities.

The emphasis was on the societal harm caused by such sales, especially during a time of ongoing unrest in the state.

NLANL secretary N Radhamani expressed deep concern over the rising cases of substance abuse among the youth and criticised those who, in pursuit of monetary gain, continued to sell liquor despite the detrimental impact on the community.

She called for a concerted effort to safeguard the integrity of the state and protect the youth from the dangers of substance abuse.

“Protecting the youth from substance abuse is paramount. We must halt the sale of illicit liquor in Manipur and encourage collective action to prevent this menace from growing,” Radhamani said.

The NLANL also appealed to local meira paibi groups and clubs to join hands in their intensified campaign, which aims to carry out further drives across different localities in the state.
