The nationwide general strike jointly called by various central trade unions and independent organisations against new farm laws and labour laws affected normal activities of various offices in Manipur Thursday.
Speaking to the media at Irawat Bhawan, chairman of Coordinating Body of Trade Unions, Manipur, L Sotinkumar said that the general strike is being imposed, protesting against three farms laws and four labour laws.
Instead of promoting development in the country, the new laws will promote neo-liberalism which will affect farmers and laymen, he contended.
He further said that normal life was crippled as many offices of the state such as banks, post office, insurance, BSNL stop services due to the general strike.
Inter-state bus service, van service, auto services ceased. Workers of organised and unorganised sector, street vendors do not perform daily activities. Many shops were closed down and people hardly came out for shopping, he said.
He mentioned that the one-day general strike was called by 10 central trade unions, namely the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC) and Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA).
Many independent organisations also supported the strike, he added.
