Frustration over perceived governmental negligence to deploy state forces in the vulnerable zone of Lamlai AC has sparked protests and an indefinite bandh along the crucial Imphal-Ukhrul road from Thursday.
The Lamlai Kendra Village Volunteers Force (LKVVF) convened a public meeting, decrying the inadequate deployment of state forces and the continued presence of the JAT Regiment at Uyok Ching in Thamnapokpi, an area vulnerable to Kuki militant attacks.
Initially scheduled for August 7, the bandh was temporarily averted following reported assurances from Lamlai MLA Kh Ibomcha and the Imphal East SP to bolster security measures.
However, disillusionment grew as attacks persisted, allegedly by Kuki militants, prompting the LKVVF to resume their protest actions.
The villagers accused central forces of inaction during recent bomb attacks, exacerbating tensions.
As a resolution of the gathering attended by various women organisations and local bodies of Lamlai AC at Yaingpokpi Bazar in Imphal East, LKVVF commander-in-chief Y Bosan declared the resumption of the bandh, leading to the immediate blockade of the Imphal-Ukhrul road at Yaingpokpi Bazar.
Commuters were redirected, while emergency and essential services were permitted passage after scrutiny.
“We demand a deployment of at least 30 state forces with adequate equipment to safeguard our community,” asserted Y Bosan while speaking to the media .
The commander-in-chief announced plans to intensify the bandh in collaboration with local bodies from Lamlong to Yaingpokpi, issuing advance apologies for the inconvenience caused. Recent attacks by Kuki militants have already resulted in casualties, including a young volunteer injured in a bomb attack on September 1, highlighting the volatile situation in Thamnapokpi.
Political activist Sapamcha Kangleipal, visiting the injured youth at JNIMS, condemned the escalating violence and pledged solidarity with affected residents.
“Many have suffered due to these attacks by Kuki militants,” Kangleipal emphasised, promising continued support for victims amidst the ongoing crisis.
