The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Monday launched a web portal under the sponsorship of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to expand its outreach in the state.
During the launch, MHRC acting chairperson Khaidem Mani announced that a total of 22 cases were filed as soon as the portal was launched.
He said that the web portal has been launched to give a comfortable platform to raise a complaint or lodge complaints by any victim of human rights violation.
Anyone can raise complaints through a web portal by sitting at his or her home, Mani said, adding that all complaint cases may or may not take up, except for human rights violation cases.
A suo-moto case has been taken up in connection with the Imphal Free Press news report entitled: ‘Contractor alleged of leaving road unattended after withdrawing funds’ published on May 16, said Mani.
There are many issues, problems and incidents related to human rights violations, for which suo-motu cases can be taken up but the commission does not have enough manpower to level up in its action, Mani said.
Mani said that the commission will monitor trial proceedings of the courts related to drug cases, as local dailies have reported that many drug trial cases are pending. The commission can intervene in the court’s trial for speeding up, he said.
“Intervention for speedy trial of pending drug cases and crime against women and children will follow through the suo-motu cases,” Mani added.
