Manipur Governor, CM convey Ningol Chakouba greetings

The governor, in his greetings, said that Ningol Chakkouba is a unique festival of the Meitei community, celebrated every year with great joy and happiness.

Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Saturday conveyed warm greetings and good wishes to the people of the state on Sunday especially to the married womenfolk of the state on the occasion of Ningol Chakkouba festival which falls on Sunday.

The governor, in his greetings, said that Ningol Chakkouba is a unique festival of the Meitei community, celebrated every year with great joy and happiness.

He stated that Ningol Chakkouba is observed on the second day of the New Moon of the Manipuri month of Hiyangei (October-November) in the Meitei Lunar Calendar.

On this day, the married sisters are invited over by the brothers to a feast at their parental homes and given ‘Dakshina’, he mentioned. He emphasised that the festival is celebrated in all the Meitei families, rich and poor alike, adding that these intimate and nostalgic moments strengthen the bond of love and affection between the brothers and sisters.

“In fact, the role of the festival significantly stands out as it helps in keeping the social fabric intact. It is a very positive development that other communities also have appreciated the ethos of this festival and have taken to celebrating this festival with fervour,” the Governor said and urged all to celebrate the festival in its true spirit.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also extended heartiest greetings and warm wishes to the people of the State on the auspicious occasion of Ningol Chakkouba which falls on Sunday.

In his wishes, he pointed out that Manipur is a place of abundant natural beauty and a colourful society of multiple ethnic communities living together with varieties of cultures.

He asserted that Ningol Chakkouba is one of the biggest festivals of Manipur celebrating the unbreakable bond of love between brother and sister. It reinforces parental care and affection for married daughters and also promotes the feeling of harmonious social life by indulging in sharing of blessings, he said.

“Let Ningol Chakkouba motivate us to strive for togetherness. On this auspicious occasion, let us also reaffirm to rekindle the flame of unity and oneness amongst all communities in the State,” CM N Biren wished.
