Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey meets Home Minister Amit Shah

The Manipur Governor briefed the Home Minister about the recent flood that wreaked havoc in the state due to Cyclone Remal and held discussions on the prevailing situation in the state, a Raj Bhavan release stated.

Amid the fresh wave of violence in Jiribam district, Manipur triggered by the heinous killing of Soibam Saratkumar on June 10 by Kuki insurgents, heavy reinforcements of CRPF, BSF, ITBP and RAF have begun arriving in the state.

Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and briefed the Home Minister about the recent flood that wreaked havoc in the state due to Cyclone Remal and held discussions on the prevailing situation in the state, a Raj Bhavan release stated.

Other reports said, the Union Home Minister chaired a key meeting with officials on the Manipur situation after the meeting on Jammu and Kashmir.

Officials say, central forces which had gone for election duty in different parts of the country had returned to the state for further duties given the abnormal situation and tension prevailing in the state, which had been brewing since the last one year.

It may be recalled here that, there were widespread protests both in the valley and the hills when the central forces were withdrawn from several vulnerable areas in the fringe villages located in both the valley and the hills.

Women groups including the Meira Paibis tried to block the central forces mostly from the CRPF, BSF and other paramilitary forces from leaving the area as they felt threatened by attacks from militants.
However, violence and ethnic clashes had a lull during the elections despite a few incidents although people did not feel safe working in the fields.

Reports say, as many as 200 companies of central forces have arrived in recent days and have started occupying schools and college hostels in and around Imphal, besides deployment in the hill areas also.
According to reports, central forces have begun arriving in some places in Imphal West district including National Sports University in Senjam Chirang area, Kanto Sabal, Ingourok besides Tairenpokpi and Phayeng areas.

The arrival of a huge number of central forces and occupying several strategic locations had led to speculations of an impending combing operations to weed out armed militia groups and militants in both the valley and the hills.

Mention may be made that Kuki militant had burnt down 70 houses of Meitei-dominated villages of Lamtai khunou, Narayanpur, and Bhutangkhal under Borobekra Sub-division of Jiribam District including the Jirimukh Forest Beat and Chotobekra Police Check post.

Moreover, the Kuki militants launched attacks, employing explosive devices on Lamtai Khunou till Saturday’s morning.
