Manipur government declares public holiday due to heavy rains

Departments involved in rescue and relief operations and essential services namely, Home, Police, District Administration, Relief and Disaster Management, Power, Health and Family Welfare, PHE, Water Resources, PWD, GAD, CAF and PD, MI, Forests, LDA, etc., will remain a working day.

The Manipur government has declared Wednesday as a public holiday for all government offices including Public Sector Undertakings/corporations/autonomous bodies/societies under the Government of Manipur.

The latest notice issued by deputy secretary, General Administration Department, Government of Manipur, Angom Heera Singh on Tuesday by orders and in the name of the Governor, stated that all banks, financial institutions and LIC, etc, located in the state will also remain closed on Wednesday.

The statement said that departments involved in rescue and relief operations and essential services namely, Home, Police, District Administration, Relief and Disaster Management, Power, Health and Family Welfare, PHE, Water Resources, PWD, GAD, CAF and PD, MI, Forests, LDA, etc., will remain a working day. Moreover, officers/employees of all the other departments must also be available on phone call for any eventuality, it added.

It also mentioned that a separate order dated July 2 concerning schools and colleges have already been issued by the concerned Department.n

It noted that incessant rains over the last few days have caused an overflow of the rivers in Manipur inundating several places in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kangpokpi, Senapati, Thoubal and Bishnupur Districts. It further assured that the government is carrying out rescue and relief works through the respective district administrations and the concerned departments.

It appealed to the general public to stay indoors except in case of emergency to enable the authorities in carrying out the rescue and relief operations and evacuation of the stranded individuals smoothly.

The order is issued in exercise of the powers conferred by the explanation under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 (XXVI of 1881), with the approval of the Competent Authority, it mentioned. It also attached a copy of the Public Advisory dated July 1, vide file no 9/2/2024-RDM/NC (FLOOD), issued by the Department of Relief and Disaster Management, Government of Manipur as per the report from Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in Manipur for the next five days.
