The 24-hour general strike called by the Joint Action Committee formed in connection with the case of a miscarriage allegedly caused by excessive police action has been called off after the JAC members met Chief Minister N Biren on Sunday around 4.30 pm.
After the meeting with the chief minister, JAC convenor N William told the media that N Biren Singh assured them of preventing further excessive use of force by security forces in the future. The chief minister also assured of fulfilling their demands; therefore, JAC called off the general strike, he said.
He further said that the government will provide financial assistance for the treatment of Naorem Ongbi Sanjita, who was critically injured when security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse a group of protestors.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh has assured of taking action against police officials who are responsible for the incident. After a thorough discussion, he further assured of releasing the protestors arrested on September 14 from Kakwa area.
He said that the CM Biren further assured of providing compensation before the last rites of the stillborn child are carried out.
The JAC on Saturday imposed a 24-hour general strike in protest against the excessive use of force by security personnel.
Meanwhile, the media cell of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal, stated a release, updating the health status of Naorem Ongbi Sanjita Devi, 34 years wife of Naorem Dipak Singh of Kakwa Naorem Leikai at 4.30 pm of Sunday.
The patient has a pulse of 124/min, BP 108/66 mmHg, SpO2 95%, Urine output 50-120 ml/hour in the last 6 hours, it said. She is on ventilator support and ionotropes. Her condition remains critical as before, it said. RIMS Hospital is giving its best effort with available facilities for her treatment, it added.
Sanjita was hospitalised and kept in an ICU at RIMS after suffering from a tear gas suffocation during an agitation in Imphal on Thursday. She suffered a miscarriage in the ICU.
Sanjita was at home when security forces fired tear gas shells to control an angry mob. The mob was protesting, demanding the unified command be handed over to the Manipur government to defend against alleged narco-terrorist attacks.
