Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the abduction of Oinam Thoithoi and Thokchom Thoithoiba by Kuki militants, warned the Manipur government for 48-hour general strike in Thoubal District from 3 am of Tuesday if no action is taken to rescue the victims by Monday.
During a press meet held in Thoubal, JAC co-convenor Keisam Yaiphabi emphasised the committee’s ongoing patience as they awaited the release of the two civilians. The government has claimed to be working on their rescue for the past four days.
She further cautioned that if no progress is made, the JAC will enforce the general strike throughout the district, though she assured that religious activities and hospitals would remain unaffected.
Meanwhile, the aggrieved Meira Paibis of Thoubal staged a protest by obstructing NH-102 at Yairipok Lamkhai of Thoubal Mela Ground, demanding the release of Oinam Thoithoi and Thokchom Thoithoiba. The women occupied the highway, stating they would not leave until the two civilians were handed over.
On the other hand, residents of Thoubal Kshetri Leikai also organised a sit-in protest, urging the government to act swiftly.
Additionally, the JAC also adopted several resolutions during a public meeting held at Leishangthem on Monday. They resolved to conduct lawful protests alongside the people of the state against the government’s failure to fulfill its promise to rescue the individuals.
The committee issued an ultimatum to the state government, demanding action by 1 pm on Monday and indicating plans for democratic agitation. They stated that any untoward incidents during these protests must be borne by the state government, security advisor, and central government.
