Manipur Education Minister S Rajen files petition against four candidates of Lamshang constituency

Minister S Rajen termed the allegations against him regarding his affidavit mentioned in his poll nomination papers as "false".

Manipur Education Minister Sorokhaibam Rajen on Wednesday filed a complaint petition against his four rival candidates from Lamshang Assembly Constituency for false allegations relating to dual father’s name and different BA passing year certificate.

Rajen appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West and filed a complaint petition for taking cognizance of offence under section 500/34 IPC against the rival candidates.

The minister, in his petition, stated that he is a sitting member of Manipur Legislative Assembly elected from Lamshang AC holding the portfolio of minister of Education to the government of Manipur. He is also a candidate of 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election to be held on February 28 and March 5, 2022.

Rajen alleged his four opposing candidates namely Arambam Karamjit (Independent candidate), Khundrkapam Kanba Meitei (JD-U candidate), Pukhrambam Sumati (NPP candidate), and Likmabam Manibabu (INC candidate) for accusing him, without any basis, but with false allegation and with an intention to harm the imputation, reputation against him. He included Poknapham editor, Aribam Robindro and publisher, Gurumayum Shantikumari Devi in his petition as respondent.

He also stated that because of serious false allegations, his prestige and reputation has been lowered in front of the large public in the state and the country. As such, the accused are liable to punishment under section 500 IPC and prayed for issuing warrant of arrest against them and punishment according to the law, he stated.

In the petition, he quoted the news article published in different local dallies claiming that the contents are all false allegations. He also clarified in the petition, based on published news, that his father’s name is Sorokhaibam Nila Singh, his foster father and who is also the elder brother of his real father, as per records of the electoral roll. Both his real father and his foster father were living together under the same roof. However, after the death of his foster father S Nilla, he was cancelled from the voter list and in its place the real father’s name Sorokhaibam Yaimabi was put up, he said.

As per the guideline of the ECI and Manipur state the bio-data in the nomination paper of the candidate should be tallied with record of the electoral roll. As such the information submitted in the nomination paper for the election of 12th Assembly Election are all correct and genuine, the petition stated.

Regarding his different year of passing BA, he stated that he passed the BA exam in the year 1988 from Manipur University. But the certificate was missing and untraceable. So, he published a missing certificate advertisement in the local dailies, the petition said. Accordingly, the controller of examination of MU issued a certificate on February 3, 2022. He passed BA from YK College under Roll Number 13681 of 1988, he stated on his petition.

Following the complaint, the chief judicial magistrate, Imphal West filed the petition for taking cognizance of offence under section 500/34 IPC against the accused persons and fixed February 16 for motion hearing.
