Manipur: Drugs worth Rs 31 crore seized, head constable among three arrested

As many as 212 soap cases containing suspected Heroine No.4 weighing 2.132 Kgs approximately were recovered.

In the biggest ever drug haul so far in Kangpokpi district and Manipur in 2022, Kangpokpi police on Monday seized a huge quantity of suspected heroine no.4 worth Rs 31.80 crore in the international market as part of its steadfast stand on the ‘War against Drugs’ campaign.

A head constable of the Manipur police was arrested along with two others in connection with the drug seizure.

The seizure was made on Monday at around 1.30 pm by a team at Kangpokpi police station led by SI Hemjamang Khongsai and SI Raju Singh under the direct instruction of OC Kangpokpi Inspector Sunil Kumar and overall supervision of Amrita Sinha SP Kangpokpi; Tholu Rocky, additional SP (LO); Abul Kalam, additional SP (Ops); Sheimang Khongsai, DSP Gamnom-Saparmeina Police Station while checking vehicles plying along the National Highway-2.

Briefing media persons at her office chamber at Kangpokpi, SP of Kangpokpi, Amrita Sinha said that during the frisking and checking the police team stopped one unregistered Honda City Car (Maroon colour) driven by Solensei Haokip (23), son of Thanglun Haokip of G Khonom village, Churachandpur district with one occupant Jamgoulen Haokip (21), son of Letthang Haokip of Kingkin village, Churachandpur district.

She continued that on preliminary interrogation, the duo admitted themselves to be drug peddlers trafficking illicit drugs along the NH-2 and confessed possession of suspected drugs in their vehicle.

She also said that upon their disclosure, due formalities and Standard of Procedures of the ND&PS Act were observed by informing senior officers and the vehicle was duly searched in the presence of Puyam Rahuldev Singh, SDC (HQ), DC Kangpokpi as Executive Magistrate and independent witness of Kangpokpi Town Committee and Kangpokpi Youth Union which lead to the recovery of 212 number of soap cases containing suspected Heroine No.4 weighing 2.132 Kgs approximately valued about Rs 63,60,000 in the local market and Rs 31,80,00,000 in the international market. Two mobile handsets, three ATMs and the vehicle were seized by observing formalities, the SP informed.

According to the confession of the duo, they obtained the suspected Heroine No.4 from Lunminthang Haokip alias Mimin Taqchapa (33), son of (L) Holkholet Haokip of Kholmun village in Churachandpur district, who is serving as Head Constable of Manipur Police Department, the SP added.

She also said that the police Head Constable was also arrested on Tuesday with the assistance of SP Churachandpur and OC Churachandpur Police Station along with one unregistered Mahindra Thar vehicle (dark grey in colour) and one mobile phone from his possession at his residence.

A regular case under FIR No.17(5)2022/KPI-PS u/s 21(C)/29/60(3) ND&PS Act has been registered for investigation.

The trio was produced before the court and they have been remanded to police custody for 10 days.

Kangpokpi SP rewarded the police officers leading the team in the seizure of drugs with citations and cash rewards.

Abul Kalam, MPS, Addl. SP (Ops) Kangpokpi said that Kangpokpi police have been strongly advocating the Chief Minister's 'War on Drugs' in the district by destroying more than 2000 acres of poppy cultivation land in the district so far while adding that Kangpokpi district is the second-highest poppy plantation district in the state.

He said that despite being posted in the district in January, most of the district police officers, despite hectic election duties, are sincerely committed to curbing the drugs menace in the district while adding that the Kangpokpi district police is the only police so far that managed to arrest six poppy cultivators and put them behind bars.
