Irate womenfolk of Khwairamband Keithel on Tuesday took to the streets to protest and condemn both the central and state governments for their disregard on the escalating violence in Manipur, following the September 1 reign of drone attacks by Kuki militants on peripheral Meitei villages.
The attack resulted in the death of a 35-year-old woman and casualties of several others, sparking statewide outrage.
The womenfolk took out rally towards the chief minister’s bungalow demanding authorities to break the silence and initiate stringent immediate action.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the rally, a woman protestor questioned why the government was silent even after such malicious attack.
“Why is the governor of the state silent when Kuki militants are bombing villages using drones?” she asked.
The protester expressed disbelief and anger over the authorities’ lack of response to the situation.
She further questioned why the authorities did not come down with an iron fist on the genocidal act of the Kuki terrorist and why they were not arrested.
“Dropping bombs using drones is something done in wars between countries, yet Kuki militants are allowed to attack Meitei people without backlash,” she said.
The protestors were halted by police near Gambhir Singh Market complex at BT Road, where tensions escalated with the police.
The women cautioned that they would resort to intense agitation unless decisive actions were initiated to nail down and arrest Kuki terrorists.
“It is the responsibility of the government to defend Manipur, not the people,” she added.
