Unknown miscreants fired several rounds at the residence of the Good Governance Party (GGP) president on Wednesday; no casualties were reported in the incident.
Police said the incident occurred around 2.30 am, when some unknown armed individuals fired at the residence of GGP president Yambem Laba in Uripok Yambem Leikai, Imphal West.
Yambem Laba was formerly a representative of
The Statesman and a freelance journalist.
The GGP is a newly formed regional political party in Manipur, established on July 29 of this year. During the spot investigation, it was found that the wall of Laba’s residence was damaged. Later, five empty shell casings from SLR rifles were recovered near the main gate.
In connection with the incident, Laba told the media at his residence the same day that any misunderstanding could be resolved at the negotiating table rather than through such attacks. He added that civilians could have been injured due to the area’s congestion.
Earlier, in a TV interview, Yambem Laba questioned why Chief Minister N Biren Singh has not yet removed Nemcha Kipgen and Letpao Haokip from their positions.
He stated that Nemcha Kipgen is the wife of the Kuki National Organization (KNO) chief, who is leading the current attacks by Kuki militants in the Manipur valley. Haokip is also strongly involved in the present violence, which empowers the Kuki militants, Laba had said.
Both the BJP ministers belong to the Kuki-Zo community and have been abstaining from the Manipur Legislative Assembly for three consecutive sessions. They are among the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs demanding a ‘Separate Administration’ for the Kuki-Zos.
Laba’s wife has lodged a complaint at the Imphal Police Station regarding the attack. She has requested that the police provide additional security to safeguard her family.
