Strongly condemning the government's act of disqualifying Rahul Gandhi from the MP seat following his conviction in a 2019 defamation case, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Sunday joined the other Congress unit across the country in staging a day-long nationwide 'Satyagraha' in Imphal.
The Satyagraha staged in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue inside Congress Bhawan, Imphal was led by MPCC president K Meghachandra; CLP leader O Ibobi; CWC member Gaikhangam and other MPCC leaders, including its students and women wings.
The protesters raised their voices against the Modi-led BJP government for "conspiring against Rahul Gandhi” and held placards which reads “Congress stands for truth and truth only”; “The truth will prevail”; “Rahul Gandhi for truth against falsehood,” and “We are Gandhian, we are not Savarkar” among others.
Speaking to the media, MPCC president K Meghachandra clarified that the attack by Rahul on a rally at Kolar in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections was not against any community but was only against PM Narendra Modi, Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi who are "fraudsters".
Alleging that Lalit Modi took out Rs 14,000 crore from Punjab National Bank using a fake letter of undertaking while Nirav Modi took Rs 11,400 crore from overseas banks using forged documents, he said Rahul was questioning the reason for not initiating action against them.
It is unfortunate that Rahul's statement on the floor of Parliament regarding the multi-crore Adani scam was withdrawn from the House, he said.
Meghachandra said such conspiracy against Rahul and the rapid harassment to Congress leaders by the BJP government shows that all the institutes and investigating agencies are being grabbed by the Modi government.
"Now things have become clear that democracy is perishing from the soil of India," he said, adding however Congress will never retreat in the fight to revive democracy.
Pointing out that the Gandhi’s family has nurtured the democracy of this country with their blood, he said that the Congress will never allow anyone to overpass the truth.
Further alleging that the country is falling in all aspects with the rapid hike of essential commodities price, GST and unemployment rate, the president reaffirmed that the Congress will continue to fight for the cause of truth and deliver democracy back to the public.
Similar protests were also staged in all the district headquarters of Manipur by the respective district Congress committees.
