Manipur Congress observes Quit India Movement Anniversary

CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh said the Congress party strongly believes in Mahatma Gandhi’s concept that non-violence is the strongest weapon.

Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Tuesday observed the 80th anniversary of Quit India Movement at Congress Bhawan, BT Road by paying floral tributes to the national leaders who sacrificed their lives during the freedom movement in the British period.

Addressing the media in connection with the ceremony, CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh said that the Quit India Movement launched on August 9, 1942 was one of the significant movements carried out by the All India Congress Committee. The movement laid the foundation for the country to get freedom from the then British Rule, he said. The primed duty of the Congress party is to commemorate the leaders who had sacrificed for the motherland, he added.

He further said that the Congress party strongly believes in Mahatma Gandhi’s concept that non-violence is the strongest weapon. The party will strictly follow this principle and will continue to do so in future, he added.

MPCC president Keisham Meghachandra Singh stressed on the importance of Quit India movement, mentioning that it was one of the historic events in the history of India. It was an outcome of the Quit India Movement that the country is able to celebrate its Independence Day every year. Through this freedom movement, the country achieved freedom from the hands of British rule, he added.

He recalled that the All India Congress Committee took the decision to launch the Quit India Movement in one of the meetings held in Mumbai on August 9, 1942. The decision was a milestone in the history of India, and it caused the British rulers to finally free the nation from their rule. The movement was joined by people from various communities irrespective of caste, creed, language, religion etc., he added.

As a part of the programme, floral tributes were paid to the freedom fighters while candles were lit at the Congress Bhawan during the evening time.

The programme was also attended by many other senior leaders of Congress, Congress MLAs and office bearers of MPCC.
