The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday approached City police station to lodged a complaint against BJP leaders over threats to leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, in his letter for registering an FIR at the City police station, has named Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, Delhi BJP leader Tarvinder Singh Marvah, Shiv Sena (Shinde) Sanjay Gaikwad, and Uttar Pradesh Minister Raghuraj Singh.
In his complaint, Meghachandra stated that Tarvinder Singh Marwah had on September 11 during a BJP event threatened leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in which he said “Rahul Gandhi baaz aaja, nahi toh aane wale time mein tera bhi wohi haal hoga jo teri dadi ka haal hua” (you better behave, or you will meet the same fate as your grandmother) reference to the Gandhi’s grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. This statement was captured on video, which Meghachandra said he has attached as evidence.
The MPCC referred to an incident on September 11, 2024, where BJP leader Tarvinder Singh Marwah, during a party event, allegedly made an assassination threat. He reportedly warned Gandhi, stating, “Rahul Gandhi, you better behave, or you will meet the same fate as your grandmother,” a reference to the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Another incident cited in the complaint involved Sanjay Gaikwad, an MLA from the Shinde Sena (an alliance partner of the BJP in Maharashtra), who on September 16, 2024, allegedly announced a bounty of Rs 11 lakh for anyone who would cut off Gandhi’s tongue.
Additionally, the complaint included remarks made by Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Bittu, on September 15, 2024, where he referred to Gandhi as the “number one terrorist of the country,” which was widely circulated on social media and television channels.
BJP leader Raghuraj Singh is also named in Meghachandra’s complaint.
“Similarly, on September 16, 2024, BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh Minister Raghuraj Singh also publicly said that Leader of Opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi is the ‘number one terrorist of India,” the Congress said in the complaint.
According to the MPCC, these statements were part of a larger conspiracy aimed at provoking public unrest, inciting violence, and creating enmity against Rahul Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. The party believes that these hate-filled comments were designed to obstruct Gandhi from performing his public duties as Leader of the Opposition, particularly his advocacy for marginalized sections of society, including women, youth, and Dalits.
The MPCC further alleged that the repeated threats and derogatory statements were attempts to jeopardize Gandhi’s safety and disturb public peace, especially during the ongoing elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana.
MPCC requested the police to register an FIR under sections 351, 352, 353, 61 of BNS, at the earliest, against Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Sanjay Gaikwad, Ravneet Bittu, Raghuraj Singh, and their associates for criminal intimidation, conspiracy, and inciting public hatred.
