Condemning the continuous rise in prices of petroleum products, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Grievance Cell, Labour Department, Kishan Congress staged a peaceful silent protest at Community Hall of Keishampat Leimajam in Imphal on Thursday.

Speaking to the media at the sideline of the protest, MPCC president K Meghachandra Singh said that in the 16 days, the prices of petroleum products have increased 14 times which made the people suffer, particularly the lower income section. Not only fuel prices, but the prices of around 800 pharmaceutical items have been increased, including agricultural items like fertiliser, he added.

While questioning the reason behind the increasing prices of essential commodities, Meghachandra said that the price of crude oil in the international market has not changed much.

"Is the BJP government running the nation just with the taxes collected from fuels, pharmaceutical items and fertilizers?” the MPCC president questioned.

MPCC wants to know the real reason behind the increase of prices on such items, he stated, adding that such skyrocketing of prices is not happening in other countries. The BJP government should address the problem created by price rise at the earliest, Meghachandra asserted.

The Congress party will fight for the cause of society seriously. The party may intensify the agitation if the government does not translate their demand into action, he warned.

He said that agriculture being the mainstay of India, increasing the prices on fuels directly hits the farmers community hard. They will spend extra charges in farming activities that will ultimately lead to increasing the prices of their produce. As such, pricing of fuel affects every section, he added.

Meghachandra said that with a lot of expectations, people gave their mandate to the BJP. But people have to undergo only pain and agony.

"The rule imposed by this BJP government of charging equal tax to every section of society irrespective of their class has created disparity between rich and poor," he condemned.
