Manipur: 74-year-old remanded to judicial custody for raping minor

The accused committed the crime on June 14 somewhere under Mao police station, Manipur.

The Special Judge POCSO Senapati in-charge has sent a 74-year-old man to 15 days of judicial custody, till July 4, on the charge of defiling a minor girl (4 years).

Rape accused Athile Lohrii of Makhan Khullen allegedly raped the minor on June 14 somewhere under Mao police station.

The accused was produced before the court by a team of Senapati women police as his police custody expired.

The police prayed before the court to remand the accused to judicial custody to further investigate the case.

The special PP submitted that the case was on after the mother of the minor lodged a complaint to the police station.

As per the complainant, her daughter was invited to the house of the accused on June 14 at around 2 pm where he raped her.

It has been established from the investigation so far that the accused had committed the crime, the special PP submitted and added that the investigation of the case is in the initial stage.

It is also said that there are signs suggestive of sexually assaulting the minor girl recently.

The accused may tamper the evidence and commit the same crime if he is released (on bail), the special PP said and sought the direction of the Court to send him (the rape accused) to judicial custody

The court, on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of the Special PP, remanded the rape accused to judicial custody till July 4.

On the other hand, locals and family members of the minor assembled in front of Cheirap Court complex when the accused was produced before the Court and staged a protest demonstration.

The protesters demanded that the rape accused must be punished as per the law of the land.
