The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the Kakwa Naorem Leikai incident has imposed a 24-hour general strike from Saturday midnight to Sunday midnight.

Speaking to the media at RIMS, Imphal on Saturday, JAC convenor Naorem William said that JAC members met with gynecologist Dr Usharani. When asked about the delivery of the fetus by a critically ill patient on ventilator support, she explained that the doctors administered medication for two days, and due to internal muscle contractions, the fetus was delivered.

The mother, Naorem Ongbi Sanjita, remains in critical condition and is still undergoing treatment in the RIMS ICU ward with ventilator support.

William pointed out that since the violence erupted, many people residing in the foothills have sought refuge in the safer valley areas. However, he stated that despite the security forces' stringent actions in the valley, even an unborn child has died.

In response to the excessive actions of the security forces, the JAC has called for a 24-hour general strike and appealed to all sections of the public to support the shutdown, he added.

The deceased foetus’s mother was hospitalized and kept in an ICU at RIMS as she was in a critical condition from tear gas suffocation during an agitation in Imphal on Thursday. While in the ICU, her unborn baby died and was stillborn.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities confirmed that the mother remains in critical condition in the ICU on ventilator support.

Sanjita was at home when security forces fired tear gas shells to control an angry mob. The mob was protesting, demanding the unified command be handed over to the Manipur Government to defend against alleged narco-terrorist attacks.
