The body of an unidentified man was found near Khongjao in Kakching district on Tuesday, sources said.
Police said the body was found by passersby and farmers on the side of a path along Lousipat road towards Tekcham, which passes thorigh Sora from Kakching.
As per reports received late in the day, the deceased was identified as one Warepam Premji, 26, son of Abhiram from Khongjom Papal under Khongjom police station in Thoubal district. Abhiram had gone missing after he went out of his house on Monday evening.
It is suspected that the person was either murdered before being dumped at the area, or a victim of hit-and-run case, the police said.
The police further stated that the body had injury marks and the windpipe was found punctured as if cut by a sharp weapon.
An expert team of forensic science arrived and carried out detailed inspection of the suspected crime scene. Afterwards, the body was collected by police and kept at JNIMS mortuary to conduct a post mortem.
Kakching police station registered an FIR in connection with the case and investigation is under way.
