Man arrested for transporting opium in Churachandpur

A man arrested for transporting suspected opium weighing over 6 kg said he collected the drugs from Myanmar national at border.

A man transporting illegal drugs was arrested at Jangmun village under Sangaikot Sub-Division in Churachandpur district on Wednesday. Opium weighing 6.167 kg was seized from his possession, sources said.

The arrested person has been identified as one Holngam Haokip, 50, son of  Holkholun Haokip from Govajang village under Sangaikot Sub-Division in Churachandpur. He revealed that he collected the suspected opium from one Kappu, a Myanmar national, at the border and he was hired for transporting the illicit drugs.   

Following a tip-off that drugs were being transported from Khuangkhai side towards Sangaikot area, a team of Churachandpur Police Station led by OC Churachandpur and a team of Sangaikot Police Station led by SI T Jangkholal Haokip and ASI Hemminthang Haokip, including SDM/Sangaikot rushed to Jangmun village and conducted frisking and checking of all vehicles coming towards Sangaikot area, as per the police sources. 

A Tata DI Pick Up and a person suspected to be in possession of contraband substances were detained. On thorough checking, suspected opium concealed in a black bag covered in a black plastic was detected from his possession. On weighing, the suspected opium was found to weigh 6.167 kg. The suspected opium was seized at 2 pm and packed and sealed in the presence of SDM/Sangaikot and other witnesses and the individual was arrested at 2.10 pm by the police. A case has been registered for further investigation, police added.

Meanwhile, another alleged drug peddler was arrested and 1,306 tablets of suspected WY along with cash and mobile were seized from his possession from Bijang village in Churachandpur district on Tuesday.

The person, identified as one Kamkhosei Hanghal, was arrested during a search operation conducted at his house by the district police following a tipoff. The search was led by a team of CCP-PS led by OC-CCP PS, Inspector Thangzamuan and OC of Women police, Inspector Chinneihlam.

During the search, seven plastic packets, suspected to contain WY tablets, were detected. On opening one of the plastic packets, it was found to contain suspected WY tablets and on counting all the seven packets, it was found to contain 1306 tablets of suspected WY, police said.

Police said the suspected WY tablets were packed and sealed in a white cloth in the presence of SDO/Tuibuong and independent witnesses and packed. Rs 14,990 (suspected to be the proceeds of drug transaction), an Infinix brand mobile phone were seized and Kamkhosei Hanghal (33), son of (L) Lhukhopao of Mongnelphai a/p Bijang family lane was arrested at 8:58 pm. A case has been registered for further investigation, police said.
