Locals stage sit-in protest against poll-related violence in Imphal East

Some unidentified miscreants reportedly fired several rounds at the residence of one Md Sikandar and L Romen located at Utchol village, Imphal East district on Monday.

Decrying poll-related violence in residential areas, locals of Utchol village in Imphal East staged a one-day sit-in-protest at their respective areas on Tuesday, sources said.

Some unidentified miscreants reportedly fired several rounds at the residence of one Md Sikandar and L Romen located at Utchol village, Imphal East district on Monday. During the incident, some of the household properties were allegedly damaged. Sikandar and Romen are supporters of NPP candidate, Lourembam Sanjoy, sources said.

One of the protestors told the media that the armed miscreants came and opened fire in the night. Who will take the responsibility if someone was injured in the firing, she asked, saying that people in Andro assembly constituency need peace, free and fair election instead of violence. Saying that violence will bring only enmity among the people, she appealed to all not to repeat similar incident in the future.

Poll-related violence were also reported last Friday at Yairipok Tulihal, Yairipok Yambem and Yairipok Top Chingtha. However, no untoward incidents occurred, sources said.
